Vaison la Romaine archaeological sites

culture, Sites historiques

The Roman remains of Vaison-la-Romaine are among the most important in France.

Easy to access, the two main sites open to the public - Puymin and La Villasse - are located in the city center, on either side of the tourist office.

Tickets sold at the ticket office at the entrance to the Puymin site also give access to the Villasse site. Audio guides in French, English, German and Dutch are available for site visits.

The Puymin site offers a magnificent walk in the heart of a district of the ancient city. We discover the remains of beautiful patrician residences: the Maison à l'Apollon Lauré of 2000 m², the Maison à la Tonnelle of 3000 m². The porticoed sanctuary, a place for walking or worship, framing a garden and a central building.

Several paths lead to the Ancient Theater, dating from the 1st century BC. The stage wall rose to 25 meters and its 32 steps, built in a semicircle, could accommodate 7000 people. Fallen into oblivion for several centuries, it was Father Sautel who unearthed the theater in 1912. We discovered in the pits concealing the machinery of the statues exhibited today at the Théo Desplans Museum. The ancient theater is the privileged setting for numerous events: the Choralies, Vaison Danse, Au fil des Voix, the Week of Ancient Theater ...
